  3. He became head of the Nigerian army in 1983
  4. and in 1985 led a coup against President
  5. Buhari, assuming the presidency himself.
  6. Babangida was born in Minna, Niger state; he
  7. trained at military schools in Nigeria and
  8. the UK. He became an instructor in the
  9. Nigerian Defence Academy and by 1983 had
  10. reached the rank of major general. In 1983,
  11. after taking part in the overthrow of
  12. President Shehu Shagari, he was made army
  13. commander-in-chief.
